SUMMARY:Scrimshaw Etching
DESCRIPTION:The origin of the word Scrimshaw is uncertain\, but we know that this art has been practiced since revolutionary times. It did not\, however\, receive widespread recognition until President John F. Kennedy\, an enthusiastic collector\, brought Scrimshaw to the public eye.\n\nThe American Whaling Fleet has ceased to exist. However\, this art is being carried on by a few American artisans. Scrimshaw is the indigenous art form of the American Whaleman. In his idle hours of cruising for whale\, he devoted himself to fashioning articles and jewelry of whale ivory.\n\nToday\, the ivory trade in the United States has been reduced to "pre-embargo ivory" - ivory that was brought into the states before sanctions were set in place\; hippo ivory - which is taken from animals that have been culled from the herds or that have killed human population\; and fossilized ivory - ivory from ancient walrus and mastodons.\n\nOther mediums for Scrimshaw are: Tagua Nuts\, antler\, bone\, and plastics.\n\nFor this class\, all supplies will be provided. You do not need to bring anything to the class.\n\nAgenda:\n
\n
Sand Tagua nut\, antler\, or bone
\n
Draw your design on paper
\n
Using graphite paper\, transfer design to medium
\n
Scrimshaw design
\n

SUMMARY:Cooperative Multitasking in Microcontrollers
DESCRIPTION:
Tired of your Arduino (or other micro) freezing waiting for ```delay()``` or some other function to complete? Most of us start by writing linear code: do task A\, wait\, do task B. But what happens when you need to blink an LED\, monitor a temperature sensor\, and listen for a button press all at the same time? If your code is stuck in a ```delay(1000)```\, your machine is completely non-responsive to the world for 1 second\, potentially missing button presses or sensor readings and not updating a display.
\n
This hands-on class moves you beyond the "blink" sketch and into the world of multitasking. You’ll learn how to write non-blocking code that allows your microcontroller to handle many tasks while being responsive to user inputs and outputs.
\nWe will use the Arduino IDE\, writing code in C which is portable between common microcontrollers.\n\nPrior experience required: You should understand the basic blink sketch that initializes a GPIO and drives it high and low to blink an LED. Also be familiar with the for loop.\n\nAll proceeds go to Knox Makers.\n\n
\n\nDirections- Knox Makers parking and entrance is located around the back of the SPARK building in the fenced in area.\n\nKnox Makers is a place for the Knoxville area’s engineers\, artists\, hobbyists\, innovators\, educators and entrepreneurs to work and play. SUMMARY:CAM Jam!
DESCRIPTION:Don’t let the name fool you\, while the end goal is more folks who can whip up their own CAM jobs this meetup targets ALL aspects of FreeCAD! Want to level up your 3D printing game and design your own stuff\, even multi-color? Have a cabinet or furniture build that you’d really like to nail down before putting saw to wood? Proficient in Fusion 360 or another CAD program and want to make the leap to our preferred FOSS solution? Have that elusive Nibblerbot 101 under your belt and not sure where to go from there? For all those and more let’s get together and figure it out!\n\nThis meetup will evolve but at the very least we’ll share tips\, tricks\, and other resources amongst ourselves. We’ll help each other over humps in our own working designs that we’re stuck on. Our resident FreeCAD maintainer Billy can give us the scoop on the latest changes in the pipeline for FreeCAD. Occasionally we could do a CAD-a-long with a preselected project to walk folks through a simple design from start to finish. Those are just some opening ideas\, share your own in the FreeCAD or CNC channels!\n\nWhether you’re brand spanking new and need help installing FreeCAD or perhaps a bit seasoned and have some knowledge nuggets to share with the rest of us ALL skill levels are welcome! And while not necessary\, having a laptop with FreeCAD loaded would be helpful (there are a limited number of shop laptops with FreeCAD installed). Check out the FreeCAD wiki for details on the current version we’re using as well as other details.

SUMMARY:Learn to Solder and Build an Optical Theremin
DESCRIPTION:Can you hear Carnegie Hall calling? In this class Issac and Ray will teach basic through hole and surface mount soldering tools and techniques. How will we do this? By building a most practical professional performance instrument called a musical optical theremin. Think of something you can maybe make spooky ghost sounds for a Scooby-Doo episode\, if you practice enough.\n\nThis custom designed project features 12 through-hole solder joints\, 36 SMT solder joints\, and 32 practice SMT solder joints with 0603 through 1206 size components.\n\nTwo instructors will be present to guide the build and provide soldering and troubleshooting tips. We have invested in digital microscopes and quality solder irons for use by each attendee\, creating a very good experience for new and experienced makers alike.\n\nNo prior experience is needed\, all tools and supplies will be provided\, just come ready to have fun.\n\nAll proceeds go to Knox Makers.\n\n
SUMMARY:Microcontrollers\, State Machines and Rotary Encoders
DESCRIPTION:
Rotary encoders are a very nice user interface for many projects. Unfortunately they are tricky to use which often results in missed pulses or doubled pulses and a frustrating interface. In this class we will implement a robust hardware and firmware solution for encoders.
\nAttendees will learn:\n
\n
The anatomy of encoders: how quadrature encoding works
\n
State machine architecture: how to map the states of a quadrature encoder into a state machine
\n
Interrupt-driven logic: respond quickly to encoder state changes while allowing for plenty of left over CPU bandwidth for other tasks
\n
Atomic port operations: single clock cycle port manipulation (versus the slower\, but beginner-friendly DigitalWrite() of the Arduino ecosystem)
\n
De-bouncing technique: differentiating between a real click and mechanical switch noise
\n
\nWe will use the Arduino IDE\, writing code in C. Code will be specific to the microcontroller used (most likely be either a Nano or Pico 2) but can fairly easily be translated to other platforms.\n\nPrior experience required: You should understand how setup() and loop() work\, some basic C syntax\, and using GPIOs as outputs (e.g. DigitalWrite()) and as inputs (e.g. DigitalRead()). It may be helpful to read a brief tutorial on interrupt service routines. They will be explained in class but prior exposure may make it easier to digest on the fly.\n\nAll proceeds go to Knox Makers.\n\n
SUMMARY:Carve a Simple Wooden Spoon
DESCRIPTION:This class is a beginner level class. We will carve a simple wooden spoon. The spoon is to be functional and not ornamental. Our spoons will be carved from basswood. Basswood is considered a hardwood\, but is soft\, has very little grain\, and is easy to carve. This will allow the student to use a gouge and knife with the least amount of energy. It will increase the opportunity for success. \nFor this class\, we will use a gouge to hollow out the bowl portion of the spoon and use a knife to shape the outside of the bowl and handle. \n\nDiscussions at the beginning of the class will talk about the different types of carving tools and how to use them. For this class\, we will only use one gouge and a knife\, you will be exposed to different types of carving tools. \n\nDuring our initial discussion\, we will discuss sharpening techniques as well. For this class\, we will not sharpen any tools\, but you will be introduced to different processes for sharpening. Sharp tools are a requirement for creating nice looking carvings. Dull tools will tear wood and make your carving less visually appealing.\n\nWhat you need to bring to the class:\n\nFor this class\, all supplies will be provided. You do not need to bring materials to the class.\n\n
\n

For all those and more let’s get together and figure it out!\n\nThis meetup will evolve but at the very least we’ll share tips\, tricks\, and other resources among ourselves. We’ll help each other over humps in our own working designs that we’re stuck on. Our resident FreeCAD maintainer Billy can give us the scoop on the latest changes in the pipeline for FreeCAD. Occasionally we could do a CAD-a-long with a pre-selected project to walk folks through a simple design from start to finish. Those are just some opening ideas\, share your own in the FreeCAD or CNC channels!\n\nWhether you’re brand spanking new and need help installing FreeCAD or perhaps a bit seasoned and have some knowledge nuggets to share with the rest of us **ALL skill levels are welcome**! And while not necessary\, having a laptop with FreeCAD loaded would be helpful (there are a limited number of shop laptops with FreeCAD installed). Check out the [FreeCAD wiki](https://wiki.knoxmakers.org/FreeCAD) for details on the current version we’re using as well as other details.
